On the 28th of June in the National Square, was opened a memorial stone in memory of victims of Soviet occupation and communist totalitarian regime. The event began keeping a moment of silence, afterwards the ceremony continued with flower submission, in the context of marking 70 years since the occupation of Bessarabia (nowadays Republic of Moldova) by the Soviet Union. "People who does not know their history has no future" with this statement the mayor of Chisinau began his speech. Dorin Chirtoaca said that 28th of June is a dark day for Moldova and this should serve an opportunity to unite people, "to go with dignity, with the heads up in Europe." "Today, through this action, we can restore people's dignity, so that pain of 70 years gathered to be healed and the wounds treated," said Dorin Chirtoaca. The day of 28th of June, 1940 was declared Day of Soviet occupation, by a decree signed by the Interim President of the Republic of Moldova, Mihai Ghimpu. Annually, this day will be recorded as a day of commemoration of the victims of Soviet occupation and communist totalitarian regime. This decree generated negative reactions from the Moldovan Communist Party and Russian government. Even the parties from the Alliance for European Integration think that it was a harsh decision. "We condemn the crimes of the communist regime on whose behalf there was hundred thousand people killed. Monuments dedicated to this procedure should be demolished and the hammer and sickle symbol, should be prohibited," said the president Mihai Ghimpu.
